Dr. Martin Shain is founder and principal of the Neighbour at Work Centre®, a consulting agency in the area of workplace mental health and safety [] to which he brings long experience in law and practical social science.  His main focus is on helping employers and unions understand and meet their new legal obligations to provide and maintain psychologically safe and healthy workplaces. He does this through consulting, speaking, research and teaching.  Martin’s practical work is supplemented by academic appointments in the departments of public health at the University of Toronto and Simon Fraser University.  In pursuit of his personal mission to enhance the protection of workers’ mental health, he is a member of the core Technical Committee that developed Canada’s first National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. It was released in January 2013. His three background papers in support of that Standard are published on the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s  His most recent book is “Preventing Workplace Meltdown: an employer’s guide to maintaining a psychologically safe workplace” (Shain and Baynton, Carswell, 2011).  Presently Martin is partnering with “Mental Health Works” at the Canadian Mental Health Association to develop and deliver several innovative programs and services to every organizational level from the boardroom to the shop floor.
